Iodine

Iodine, also known as iodide, is a mineral that can be present in the earth's surface and ocean waters. Iodine can be present in a number of salt water and plant-based foods, although it is most commonly found in iodized salt.

It's important to consume enough iodine in your diet. Hormones, embryonic growth, and other processes are all controlled by it.

Iodine is important for thyroid health. The thyroid gland, which is situated at the base of your skull, aids in hormone output regulation. Hormones regulate appetite, cardiac health, and other bodily functions.

Iodine is taken up by the thyroid in small doses to make thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormone development can be decreased if you don't have enough iodine. Hypothyroidism is a disease caused by a "low" or underactive thyroid gland.

Fibrocystic breast syndrome causes painful lumps in the breasts and is a noncancerous condition. It mostly affects women in their fertile years, but it may also affect women after menopause. Iodine tends to help relieve pain and other effects in some trials, but further testing is needed to validate this.

Iodine's brain-development benefits continue into early infancy for developing babies and infants. Iodine deficiency raises the risk of learning disability in infants.
